Star Trek reboot gets fourth film with Chris Hemsworth

It's official: Kirk's father will return as Star Trek movies go even further Beyond.

It's barely had a chance to go Beyond as yet, but the rebooted Star Trek franchise will be back with a fourth film, Paramount Pictures has officially announced. In it, Chris Hemsworth will reinhabit the role of George, Captain Kirk's father, whom we haven't seen since the first film.

According to the announcement, the two -- who've never met before -- will finally meet. I'm assuming there's either some time travel or heavy makeup involved, because Hemsworth is actually three years younger than Kirk actor Chris Pine, according to entertainment site IMDb.

CNET sister site CBS News adds that the rest of the core cast will return, and J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce, while J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will author. No release date has been announced.

The news comes as Trek fans gear up to celebrate 5o years of the franchise and following word that Netflix will stream the new Star Trek series. "Star Trek Beyond" opens on Thursday in Australia and on Friday in the US and UK. You can read our "Star Trek Beyond" review here.
