The most important casting of the upcoming "Star Trek: Discovery" has been revealed. According to Entertainment Weekly, the star of the long-awaited return to Starfleet will be Sonequa Martin-Green, aka Sasha on AMC's "The Walking Dead."

Although anyone can die at any moment on "The Walking Dead," EW is reporting that Martin-Green also will continue playing Sasha, the tough former firefighter who's lost nearly everyone she ever loved. We'll see how long that lasts once she blasts off into space, but should Martin-Green want out of zombieland, there are a million ways to end that contract. (You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille -- too soon?)

On "Star Trek: Discovery," Martin-Green will play a starship lieutenant commander 10 years before Captain James Kirk began his five-year mission. It's the first time that the lead character on a Trek show hasn't been the captain, as well as the first time it's been an African-American woman. And series creator Bryan Fuller has hinted at complexities for the character.

"We're going deep into something that was for me always very tantalizing, and [we're telling] that story through a character who is on a journey that is going to teach her how to get along with others in the galaxy," Fuller told reporters this summer during the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "For her to truly understand something that is alien, she has to first understand herself."

Previous casting announcements included Michelle Yeoh (YES!) as a captain (YES!), and most recently, three Klingons announced December 12. See more about the known cast of "Star Trek: Discovery" here.

"Star Trek: Discovery" will air through the CBS All Access streaming service in May 2017, and through Netflix in certain countries. (Disclosure: CBS is CNET's parent company.)
