If you run a small business, you can now take advantage of an app that replaces your cash register no matter where you are in the world. Square, which makes a credit card reader that plugs into phones and tablets so small businesses can accept card payments, has made its Square Register app available worldwide.

The news was announced today by Square founder and former Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey at a London event organised by the Financial Times. Currently available in the US, Canada and Japan, Square Register will now be available to merchants around the world. The app works in English, Spanish, French and Japanese and supports 130 currencies.

Square Register includes a dashboard giving merchants data on their activity that can be accessed from anywhere. The app can track inventory, issue digital receipts to customers by email or text, and enable merchants and customers to exchange feedback and resolve issues. It works with hardware such as printers and bar scanners, and with software such as SumAll and If This Then That.

The app runs on the iPhone and iPad and Android devices and is available through the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Square makes a free credit card reader that plugs into your phone or tablet, making it easy and cheaper for small businesses to accept credit cards. Last week the company debuted a new reader that will work with cards that have just a magnetic stripe and cards that have an embedded EMV chip for chip-and-PIN payment. The new reader costs $29.

The reader and payment processing service are still only available in the US, Canada and Japan, but you don't need the reader to use the Square Register app.

Square was founded in 2009 in San Francisco by Dorsey and Jim McKelvey. Aside from the reader, Square also offers Square Stand, which turns your iPad into a cash register, and various apps for building online stores, transferring money, and ordering stuff in advance.
