Individual members select, customize, and control deliveries, preserving their privacy while preventing delivery of junk email.
Two types of companies are using the NETdelivery service. Content providers, such as Inc. Online and Inter@ctive Week, use the system to deliver their publications to member desktops regularly. Direct sales companies, such as clothing catalog retailer Lands' End and computer marketer Insight Direct send personalized sales offers and promotional materials to customers.
Typical fees for online magazine subscriptions are pennies per delivery and include full reporting of aggregate demographics, including who received the delivery and how many actually read it.
NETdelivery works with all standard proxy firewalls and delivers branded, multimedia-rich content complete with Web hyperlinks and advertisements. Deliveries can be executed within hours for breaking news, sales offers, or urgent communications.
Deliveries can be personalized by geographic location or topic, turned off for specific periods, made only on specific days. User privacy is protected because only a member ID code goes to content providers.
Member software runs under Windows 3.1, Windows 95, NT, and Unix platforms, with Macintosh and OS/2 support due by year's end. Both Netscape Communications' and Microsoft's browsers are supported today. America Online and CompuServe will be supported before the end of the year.
A free beta copy of the member software will be available soon from NETdelivery's Web site; software for information providers also is free. A free trial offers no fees for three months; afterward, some accounts will be charged a service fee, depending on the level of customization.
