Sony releases A58, NEX-3N and compact cameras

New models across the Sony range include a mid-range SLR, interchangeable lens NEX and compact cameras.

Sony's range of photography gear gets a refresh with a brand new SLR, interchangeable lens camera (ILC) and compact models.

The big hitter of the bunch is the A58, which falls under the SLR banner though it uses Sony's translucent mirror technology, giving it a few advantages over traditional models, like fast continuous shooting speeds. The A58 has a 20.1-megapixel Exmor APS-C HD sensor, 8 frames per second burst and a new SVGA resolution OLED viewfinder. Previous models like the A57 only had a regular LCD electronic viewfinder.

It also comes with a 15-point AF system and improved subject tracking to lock on to subjects more easily. The LCD screen at the rear of the camera can also tilt 180 degrees for better viewing angles.

In the NEX range, Sony has added a more basic model called the 3N, which uses a 16-megapixel APS-C HD sensor and is designed for portability. At just 210, grams it's definitely one of the smallest and lightest ILCs on the market, and claims to be the lightest with an APS-C sensor. The 3N also comes with a screen that tilts 180 degrees for self-portraits, and auto object framing, which is designed to automatically crop the photo for a more pleasing result.

Sony has also packed another proprietary technology inside called Triluminos colour, which promises more vivid colours when videos and photos are played back on compatible Bravia TVs.

On the compact and point-and-shoot side, three new models were announced: the WX300, HX300 and TX30. The WX300 has a 20x optical zoom lens inside a svelte chassis, as well as built-in Wi-Fi, while the TX30 is a new waterproof model that can go down to 10 metres underwater. The HX300 joins the Canon SX50 HS in entering the realm of 50x zoom territory.

Pricing and availability for these new models have not been made available for Australia yet.
