Sony proffers another pricey 3D TV

The Sony KDL-NX810 series is Sony's fourth for 2010 to feature 3D compatibility, while it's the second-least-expensive of the four, it's still not cheap.

Sony will quadruple-down on 3D when its latest series of LED-based LCDs hits stores in September. The new KDL-NX810 series is the company's fourth of 2010 to display in three dimensions, and while less expensive than two of its brethren are, it nonetheless doesn't come cheap.

Starting at $3,000 for the 46-incher, the NX810 models cost a few hundred bucks more than Sony's already expensive HX800 entry-level 3D models. The price difference pays for Monolithic styling--which we loved in the KDL-NX800 series--as well as built-in Wi-Fi, Yahoo Widgets, and a light sensor.

Meanwhile, the NX810 lacks the extras you'll find on the step-up XBR models--namely the full-array local dimming LED backlight of the XBR-HX909 series (instead the NX810's LED backlight is edge with local dimming, like the HX800's), and the 3D glasses and integrated emitter of the XBR-LX900 series.

Like the other non-LX900 Sony 3D TVs, the NX810 series require you to buy the glasses ($150 a pair--the same as Panasonic and Samsung) as well as a separate emitter to sync the glasses to the TV ($50--both Samsung and Panasonic build the emitters into their TVs). Sony's free 3D content offer includes free 'Meatballs' among other treats.

Sony reps tell us that we'll be receiving a 46-inch NX810 review sample soon. In the meantime, here are a few more details.
