Crave spends an excessive amount of time having arguments about technology. One of our ongoing debates is about the use of scroll wheels.
Our resident MP3 player reviewer thinks Apple's Clickwheel is the best invention of all time and can go on for hours about why all handheld devices should have scroll wheels. He may have a point, but for those of us that spend our time with mobile phones, we're usually stuck with keys and buttons, so try to defend them out of pride.
There are a few mobile phones out there with scroll wheels, such as the Sony Ericsson P series, but most phones don't have one. Fortunately, LG has made the LG U400 music phone (pictured), which not only has 3G with video calling, stereo Bluetooth, stereo speakers, a 2-megapixel camera and an expandable microSD slot, but also has a nifty scroll wheel.
The scroll wheel lets you navigate through contacts, MP3s and the rest of the menu. It even makes a scratching noise when an MP3 is playing, so that you can pretend you're as cool as Grandmaster Flash -- as long as no one is listening. It has the same glossy casing as the, but it doesn't have a touchpad and it's more chunky.
We think it's going to be launched sometime next week but we'll let you know for definite once we find out. In the meantime, you're going to have to make the scratching noises yourself. Expect a full review soon. -AL
Update: The LG U400 is now available for free on a monthly contract from the 3 network. A is now live.
