Short Take: Register.com signs up 1 million Net names

Network Solutions (NSI) competitor Register.com has processed more than 1 million domain name registrations, the company said. NSI runs the primary domain name registration system but must allow five other companies, called "test bed" registrars, to tap into the system to register domains. More than 60 companies have been approved to compete with NSI by a nonprofit administrative body, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, charged with fostering competition among registrars.
