Short Take: Pacific Bell offers "virtual" ISP services

Local phone giant Pacific Bell unveiled new "virtual" services for Internet service providers, allowing them to outsource many technical functions to the SBC Communications subsidiary. The new suite of services, called Virtual Point of Presence, allows Pacific Bell to house, monitor, and maintain dial-up modem pools for ISPs. Pacific Bell also offers what it calls Circuit Emulation Service, which combines traffic from both dial-up and digital subscriber line customers on a single network, simplifying management for ISPs.
