Short Take: Lucent, Jato in $50 million DSL deal

Lucent Technologies has signed a seven-year, $50 million deal to provide digital subscriber line equipment and support for Jato Communications, a new data-focused competitive local exchange carrier. Jato plans to offer DSL service to as many as 800,000 businesses and 8 million residents in secondary markets in 14 states, primarily in the Midwest and Western United States. Jato, founded in 1998, currently has a DSL trial in Denver.
