Short Take: Lernout & Hauspie in pact with GTE unit

Speech recognition specialist Lernout & Hauspie and the GTE Internetworking subsidiary of carrier GTE announced an alliance that gives the software firm access to high-end speech tools. Under terms of the deal, L&H will acquire ongoing rights to develop GTE's BBN Hark Recognizer software, a software engine for large vocabulary, for $5 million. The pact also lets GTE license a wide array of speech technologies from the software firm, including its latest RealSpeak text-to-speech technology.
