Short Take: Globalstar offers satellite data

Globalstar USA, the satellite service provider unit of Globalstar Telecommunications, has introduced data capabilities for the first time. The new Globalstar Internet Access service, which operates at speeds of 9,600 bits per second--slow compared with most dial-up modems--allows customers to use their mobile satellite handset as a modem. The service will enable customers to link their mobile satellite phones to laptops or handheld computers, even when outside of cellular service range.
