Short Take: Geoworks introduces OS for smart phones

Geoworks released an operating system designed for "smart phones," devices that convey voice and data. The Geos-SC OS allows cellular phones to add messaging capabilities (such as email) and Web browers; these can run concurrently with other applications. Graphically based, the OS supports several RISC chips, including Hitachi SH, MIPS, and ARM, and can run Java applets.
