Short Take: Chip sales fall

Global semiconductor sales totaled $10.97 billion in January, climbing $304 million from January 1997 amid a comparatively strong showing for the first month of the year, but declining $510 million from December 1997. Europe topped year-to-year growth among market segments, up 10.5 percent, followed by the Americas and Asia-Pacific, which jumped 7.3 percent and 7.0 percent, respectively. Sales fell 12.8 percent from year-ago levels in Japan. Every segment showed sales drops from December to January, totaling an overall decrease of 4.5 percent.
