Short Take: Chinese home PC demand expected to jump in 1998

About 700,000 Chinese families are expected to buy PCs in 1998, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing Ministry of Electronics Industry figures. The government figures indicate that 61 percent of all PCs sold in the past two years were for home use and that home PC sales grew 50 percent each year. Also, 6 percent of families in Beijing and Shanghai own PCs, compared with 20 percent and 38 percent respectively in Japan and the United States, Xinhua added.
