Short Take: Ascend rolls out new switching tech

Ascend Communications rolled out enhancements to its core GX 550 switching device for asynchronous transfer mode, or ATM, networks. The new GX 250 multi-service extender can replace older technologies that take advantage of SONET, or synchronous optical network, for example, allowing service providers and corporations to cut the number of network devices needed. The GX 550 upgrades will be available in June.
