Real to play on Windows embedded OSes

RealNetworks, which sells software for streaming media, and Bsquare, which helps companies develop software for handheld computers and other small devices, said they would create a version of the RealPlayer for Microsoft's Windows CE and Windows NT embedded operating systems. Bsquare will offer the software to manufacturers of home consumer devices, providing services for licensing and integration. The deal comes amid a pitched battle by streaming media providers to get their software onto cell phones and small computing devices. Microsoft, which in addition to its operating systems makes the Windows Media Player streaming software, this year forged partnerships with Texas Instruments and NTT DoCoMo to put Windows Media onto handheld computers. RealNetworks also has a deal with Texas Instruments, and last year said Nokia would put the RealPlayer in its new smart phones.
