Openwave Systems, the maker of a Web browser for cell phones, has signed a deal with a state-run handset and hardware maker in China. The company, Eastern Communications, plans to sell about 50 million handsets in China in the next five years.
The deal, announced Tuesday, raises the number of wireless device makers that that have agreed to embed the Openwave browser in their products to more than 40. By Openwave's count, more than 170 models of cell phones contain the Openwave browser. Tuesday's deal will likely allow Openwave access to more than 270 million cell phone subscribers by 2005, according to estimates by China's Ministry of Information.
