Microsoft and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Japan's largest telecommunications company, will begin a cable-TV-based interactive multimedia "experiment" today in Japan.

The service will be powered by personal computer servers running Windows NT as their operating system.

The trial involves 300 subscribers, or households, in Japan connected up with fiber-optic cables.

These subscribers will be able to get movies on demand, as well as karaoke. They will also be able to tap into interactive TV shopping programs on top of standard cable television programs.
