Nikon announces new cameras, price rises

Nikon has taken the wraps off a range of new cameras, including a 24x optical zoom model and another touchscreen compact, as well as increasing the recommended retail price on a range of its cameras.

The new Coolpix P90 is a significant upgrade from the P80, getting a 24x optical zoom to put it in the ballpark with Kodak's 24x zoom Z980 announced at CES, and Olympus' 26x zoom SP-590UZ. It features a 3-inch variable angle LCD screen, as well as ISO expandable up to 6,400.

The Coolpix S230 continues Nikon's push for touchscreen interfaces, and boasts a 28mm wide-angle lens. Speed isn't left out of the equation either; the Coolpix S620 is purported to have the fastest start-up time of any compact camera in its class.

As has been rumoured elsewhere, Nikon has also released a revised price list of its current and new models, effective 1 February 2009. Most models see an increase in recommended retail price — for example, the Coolpix P6000, which was AU$749 on release is now AU$799. The D90, which was AU$1,549.00 (body only) is now AU$1,699. On average, most prices have risen in the region of 10 to 20 per cent.

The full list of new models is below. Pricing is yet to be announced.
