Nextel Communications announced Wednesday that it awarded EDS a five-year, $234 million outsource contract to manage its corporate data center, database, helpdesk and other technical functions. The companies have chosen to use technology from Sun Microsystems as part of this project, and the three companies will work together to create wireless data technology based on Sun's Java software.
The Nextel deal stems from an agreement Sun and EDS signed last July to jointly offer business customers complementary technology services including Web site management, data center outsourcing and software hosting services based on Sun products. Nextel expects to save more than $140 million over five years from this relationship. As part of this outsourcing agreement about 290 Nextel workers will become EDS employees and will continue to support Nextel's information-technology infrastructure.
