Who's watching the Watchmen? "Justice League" director Zack Snyder, for one. On Wednesday, Snyder tweeted out a photo of Ben Affleck in what he describes as "the new Tactical Batsuit." No one looked at the photo and life went merrily on and HA, who are we kidding? Bat buffs had as many opinions as Gotham has criminals. Snyder's tweet was liked 11,000 times and retweeted nearly 9,000 times in just the first 2 hours.
Some fans noticed that the suit looked a lot like a costume worn in another Snyder movie, 2009's "Watchmen." Yep, though the Batman pic is typically dark and moody, the suit does at least resemble that of Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson) from that film.
Or maybe it was Nite Owl II that did the "ripping off," or it was all a smart Snyder homage.
@russburlingame It's pretty meta: Nite Owl (a Batman parody?) in JL filmed by the (same) director of Watchman - like an inside joke...— George Chen (@georgechen) September 14, 2016
@georgechen The word thing of course is that it was Snyder who made him a Batman pastiche. In the comics he's Blue Beetle.— Russ Burlingame (@russburlingame) September 14, 2016
And as Deadspin columnist and author Drew Magary points out, the idea of a "tactical" Batsuit, though it's a concept used in previous films, is pretty funny all by itself.
"Justice League" is scheduled for a November 17, 2017, release. Have your goggles ready.
