Star Wars fans are known for using their talents to make fun video tributes using action figures, toy vehicles and more.
Now they'll be able to enter their fan-made videos in a new contest sponsored by Lucasfilm and Disney.
To kick things off, Lucasfilm posted the video "Star Wars Go Rogue - Chapter 1" on Tuesday on the official Star Wars YouTube channel.
The "Robot Chicken" style video was made by a team from Tongal who wrote, directed and produced the original stop-motion film. It used "Rogue One" toys from the new Star Wars Hasbro line to kick off a global user-generated content contest that asks fans to share their own "Rogue Stories."
In the video, we learn that the Empire has misplaced the building instructions to the Death Star. So our hero Jyn Erso has followed an Imperial search team to the markets of Jedha hoping to recover the instructions first. This video is the first in a series of stop-motion toy films to get fans excited about the Go Rogue campaign.
"These fan-created shorts are a tribute to the incredible content that the Star Wars community posts online every day," Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media Chairman Jimmy Pitaro said on the Star Wars website. "The Go Rogue campaign was designed with Star Wars fans in mind. We want them to be front and center in the run up to 'Rogue One' by imagining and creating their own Rogue Stories."
Starting on September 30, Star Wars fans ages 18 and older can submit their own videos set in a galaxy far, far away. Winning entries will be chosen by a panel including "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" director Gareth Edwards.
Kids ages 8 to 12 can also participate by submitting their videos on Disney.com/MyRogueStory. Winners will be invited to Lucasfilm in San Francisco to attend a screening of "Rogue One," and see their short story on the big screen.
