Netscape, NeXT sign intranet pact

NeXT is partnering with Netscape to sell intranet software and development tools.

NeXT Software said today that it is teaming up with Netscape Communications to deliver packages combining software from both companies to help corporations build intranets and Web sites.

The deal, which covers joint marketing, sales, support, and training, will allow both companies to pitch Netscape's SuiteSpot server software and Navigator Web browser together with NeXT's WebObjects Enterprise application development tool to corporate users.

NeXT is the latest vendor attempting to carve out a niche in the increasingly crowded intranet development tool market by partnering with Netscape. Informix Software and Sybase have inked deals to use the company's software, and a pack of competing plans have been trumpeted by Microsoft and others.

Yesterday, Oracle raised the curtain on its plan for providing intranet technology, and IBM will sketch out its roadmap for helping Fortune 500 companies put a Web face on aging mainframe and proprietary minicomputer applications this week.
