NEC licenses USB On-The-Go

NEC Electronics is licensing TransDimension's USB On-The-Go technology for use in third-generation (3G) cell phones, TransDimension announced on Monday. The deal with the Japanese electronics company marks Irvine, Calif.-based TransDimension's entry into the Japanese phone market. TransDimension also has agreements with Qualcomm and Motorola.

USB On-the-Go is a supplement to the USB 2.0 specification, which it is also compatible with. The universal serial bus technology allows portable devices to connect to PCs and to PC peripherals with USB ports. Portable devices with USB On-the-Go technology can transfer data directly to a peripheral without first having to connect to a PC.
