Morissette videos can be collected for DVD online

CustomDisc.com announces a deal with Tower Records to give fans the chance to create their own limited rock video collections of Alanis Morissette over the Web.

Alanis Morissette's upcoming CD, MTV Unplugged, might just as easily have been called Wired, given the heavy Internet promotions planned for its release next month.

Today, CustomDisc.com announced a deal with Tower Records to give fans the chance to create their own limited rock video collection of the artist over the Web. The deal comes one day after Liquid Audio announced a deal with Morissette's label, Maverick Records, to distribute tracks from the Unplugged CD on the Internet.

Under the CustomDisc deal, anyone who purchases a Morissette CD at Tower Records online or in a brick-and-mortar store will be able to pay $5.99 to build personalized QuickTime CD videos at CustomDisc's Web site.

Customers can choose four of eight videos offered, including "Head Over Feet," "Ironic," "You Learn," and "You Oughta Know" from her hit 1996 album, Jagged Little Pill. Once a customer enters his or her choices, which can include photos and artwork, CustomDisc will burn a CD and ship it that day.

"The exciting thing about the Internet is that you come up with an idea, a new way to share your music, and it's possible," Morissette said in a statement. "It's so exciting for me to have the opportunity to share what is created."

CustomDisc, a privately held company based in Stamford, Connecticut, offers a CD-burning service that allows customers to create personalized music discs from lists of licensed songs. The most-requested songs on its Web site today were classics like "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Sugar, Sugar," and "Build Me Up Buttercup."

But the company also has been wooing younger artists, signing deals recently with Sarah McLachlan and Busta Rhymes, according to a company spokesman.

The company calls its new service CustomVideoDisc and hopes it will be used to market and merchandise music videos and other music entertainment content.

"Eventually users will be able to come to CustomDisc.com and compile their own 'best of' Seinfeld, Cheers, MASH, etc., on DVD," said CustomDisc.com CEO David Gould. "This also creates a whole new revenue stream for studios, producers, artists, record labels, publishers--everyone involved in the filmed and recorded entertainment industry."

According to the company, CustomDisc has licensed more than 250,000 individual tracks from 175 record labels and offers custom CD services to consumers as well as to corporate and business-to-business clients.
