Microsoft to open flagship store in New York on October 26

In addition to its new five-floor location in Manhattan, Microsoft says it will open its first international flagship store in Sydney on November 12.

Microsoft will open the doors to its first flagship Microsoft Store in New York on October 26.

The new Manhattan store, located at 677 Fifth Avenue, is just a few blocks from Apple's Fifth Avenue store. The 22,269-square-foot location will be the "premier venue to learn about, experience and shop" for Microsoft products, said David Porter, head of Microsoft's retail and online stores, in a blog post Wednesday. The store will officially open at noon, with opening ceremonies kicking off at 11:30 a.m. ET.

The Redmond, Washington, company confirmed last September that it would open a full-size Microsoft Store on Fifth Avenue in New York. Currently, Microsoft operates a kiosk, or "specialty store," in Columbus Circle in Manhattan but has no full-size store in the city. Microsoft opened a full-size retail store in Times Square when its original Surface tablets launched in 2012, but the store closed several months later.

The flagship New York store is opening a few weeks after Microsoft is expected to unveil its new line of Microsoft-branded Windows 10 devices, including new Surface Pro tablets, two new premium Lumia phones and an updated Microsoft Band fitness band. That big-bang hardware launch is happening in New York on October 6.

Microsoft also said Wednesday that it will open a flagship store in Sydney on November 12. This will be the company's first brick-and-mortar store outside of North America and the .

The flagship store will be located in Westfield Sydney, one of the leading shopping centers in Australia's biggest city. It's right around the corner from Australia's flagship Apple and Samsung stores. The Microsoft Store will open at noon, with opening ceremonies beginning at 11:30 a.m. AET.

"When we architected our retail plans, we committed to providing exceptional choice, value and service, and making a positive impact on the communities in which we operate," said Porter. "These flagship stores will deliver on these commitments, offering premier shopping destinations."

Microsoft already has a strong retail presence in North America with more than 110 physical stores across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The tech giant also maintains 17 store-in-store locations in China. The stores sell a full range of Microsoft products, including Windows PCs and phones, Xbox consoles and video games, software, accessories and more.
