Marist College joins Linux consortium

The college is the first member of an affiliate program that lets universities join OSDL.

Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., has joined the Open Source Development Labs, becoming the first member of an affiliate program that lets colleges and universities join the multicompany consortium, OSDL said Tuesday. The consortium, which employs Linux founder Linus Torvalds, is attempting to become the "center of gravity," a focal point for development of the open-source operating system.

Marist has close educational ties with Linux advocate IBM and through OSDL will let outside developers write Linux software for Big Blue's mainframes. OSDL plans to announce further details of the college and university affiliate program later, the consortium said.
