Mac OS X 10.3.4 (#7): Positive experiences; Mail's Junk folder; Windows connection issues; more

Positive experiences Last week we noted that a good number of users have had positive experiences -- i.e., no problems -- with the 10.3.4 Update. It's often easy to forget such positive experiences when reading a site dedicated to troubleshooting, but we do continue to receive a significant number of such positive reports. Interestingly, many of these reports also note that the user has followed our recommended Update instructions (or a similar procedure): running a disk utility, repairing permissions, etc. prior to updating and then repairing permissions afterwards. A good number of these readers also made a point of installing the "Combo" updater rather than the "incremental" updater.

System Preferences issue Reader Gray Tait reports an odd issue trying to launch System Preferences:

"Since installing the latest update 10.3.4 when I go to System Preferences under the Apple, nothing happens. I have to go to the application in the Applications folder itself to do anything."

We've not seen this issue, but we do recall hearing of it in the past, which leads us to believe that it isn't an issue confined to OS X 10.3.4.

Junk folder in Mail: showing messages when empty We previously covered a report that Mail's Junk folder indicates that it contains messages even though the folder is empty; a number of readers have since confirmed this issue. However, it doesn't appear to be restricted to OS X 10.3.4. Dave Speer writes:

"I have that same problem and am running 10.3.3. I have to leave the machine in training mode so that I can verify that the junk mail is really junk mail. I've asked my 2 local Apple dealers-- they haven't a clue as to how to fix the problem, but all that I know is that it's not related to 10.3.4."

Connections to Windows shares not working Tjeerd Wierda reports an inability to connect to Windows XP shares since installing the update:

"Since I updated to OS X 10.3.4 I am not able to connect properly to a computer running Windows XP. Via the Finder menu "Go" I can connect to an IP. I see the machine, I can login, but after the volume [is mounted] I don't see anything in it. After a short while [it] suddenly unmounts. Before the update all went smoothly. (My configuration: iMac 800 17", OS 10.3.4.)"

iSub connection issues Scott Davis reports the reemergence of an older issue with his iSub:

"Since installing the 10.3.4 update, I'm experiencing once again the iSub wake from sleep issue with my eMac. Originally, I had the iSub under a powered hub on 10.3.3 and it worked fine, even when the system would wake from sleep. However, now I'm forced back to replugging the iSub directly into the eMac to get it to work."

iBook display issues Reader Thomas Santee reports issues with iBook display calibration after installing the 10.3.4 Update:

"Several G4 iBook owners (including myself) are experiencing a loss of the display's calibration after updating to 10.3.4 whenever Screen Saver is used. Exiting the Screen Saver causes the G4 iBook display to become very bright. The calibration profile in the Displays control panel is highlighted, but it needs to be clicked on again to reset the display calibration. There is no fix other than to stop using Screen Saver."

Virtual PC conflict Reader Pete Todd notes an issue with Virtual PC that occurs on multiple Macs:

"Virtual PC (v 6.1.1), which at the best of times is slow and buggy, has been rendered totally unusable since the 10.3.4 upgrade. Problems exist on all three of our G4 Macs (Desktop 400/768 Mb, TiBook 800/768 and PowerBook AL 1.5/i Gb). Either the machine will freeze during bootup of Windows XP Home, requiring force quit and leaving various 'orphaned nodes' to be discovered during the next fsck (the most frequent symptom) or Windows will limp into memory, but any Windows app will execute agonizingly slowly. All the usual suspects checked (permissions, Disk Warrior, even reinstalled VPC, etc.), all to no avail."
