Launch Media to air on international radio

The Net music company will announce a partnership tomorrow to offer programming through CNNRadio International's overseas affiliates in the latest move to boost its offline profile.

Internet music company Launch Media will announce a partnership tomorrow to offer programming through CNNRadio International's overseas affiliates in the latest move aimed at boosting its offline profile.

The deal will give Launch, which streams music videos, a distribution platform for its music and entertainment news coverage in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

"The international radio community has demonstrated a significant appetite for the music and entertainment news content that Launch provides specifically for broadcast radio," Dan Forth, Launch senior vice president, said in a statement. "With CNNRadio International representing us in a variety of countries, we are now able to meet the demand for our services on a more global scale."

Like many Net firms, Launch is losing money as it tries to build its brand. The company, which went public in April, posted a loss of $35.1 million for 1999, while its revenue rose to $18.3 million from $9.4 million in the same period in 1998.

Launch has focused on building relationships with record labels and recording artists, signing video licensing agreements with Sony Music, EMI Recorded Music and Warner Music. But it also has inked several deals aimed at increasing its reach online and offline.

The company last month made its first foray into retailing, signing deals with CheckOut.com and Wherehouse Online Stores to sell CDs, cassettes, videos and games.

Last year, it signed an exclusive, two-year music content partnership with free Internet service provider NetZero and acquired a number of media properties, including SW Networks, renamed Launch Radio Networks.

In addition, it has worked to expand its offerings beyond music videos and radio programming. Last month, for example, Launch acquired Tourdates.com, an online guide to local, national and international concert information.
