As first reported by CNET News.com, the launch is Knight Ridder's latest attempt to build Web businesses out of its regional newspaper divisions. The sites combine regional information with popular Web offerings, such as free email, a search engine, and an online shopping section.
The new sites unveiled in the Real Cities network include Bayarea.com, Miami.com, Broward.com, and Twincities.com.
Newspapers are turning to the Web to halt potentially declining classified revenues. Web sites such as America Online's Digital City and CitySearch have created businesses with their interactive classified advertisements and are seen as possible threats to newspapers.
