Kids tricked when 'realistic game' turns out to be actual forest

It used to be that kids loved to get out in the woods and play. Do we have to resort to tricking them now? One advertising campaign thinks it might not be a bad idea.

Get a group of kids together these days and chances are pretty good they'll be looking at some kind of mobile screen rather than the world around them. To get kids to realize the real world is worth enjoying, ad agency The Barbarian Group put together the short video above titled "The Forest Is The Game."

In it, a group of kids are told they're about to experience "the most realistic game in development." They don virtual-reality headsets and walk through a curtain to discover that the goggles are fake and the most realistic version of the world is...the world itself.

"Upon removing the headsets they realize the forest is the game, more vital and alive than a billion shimmering pixels could provide," says the YouTube video's description. As the video points out, the "game" comes with surround sound, HD resolution and is fully immersive.

The ad was put together by The Barbarian Group for the Ad Council and the US Forest Service's "Discover the Forest" campaign.

"Most Americans live within 100 miles of a natural forest or grassland but believe that nature is inaccessible and are increasingly less likely to engage in the great outdoors," says the video's description. This video and the accompanying campaign hopes to overcome that misconception and get people enjoying the outdoors.

In addition to creating clever advertising campaigns, the New York-based Barbarian Group also has what's got to be one of the coolest desks in an office space anywhere.
