Jim Beam is known for its expansive lineup of whiskeys, but now it also wants to be known for an entertaining marketing stunt hitched to Apple's much-hyped iPhone event on September 7. The company announced its Apple Watch in 2014, and is expected to reveal the Apple Watch 2 on Wednesday. Not to be outdone, Jim Beam announced its very own Apple Watch on the same day.
The company hails the Jim Beam Apple Watch as "a revolutionary new 'drinkable wearable.'" The watch doesn't have a battery. It doesn't even tell the time, unless you live on Whiskey Time. The wrist-worn gadget features a green and black strap and a smooth silver hatch on top. Open the hatch to reveal a 1.5-ounce telescoping shot glass.
The watch has a small green dial attached, but it doesn't do anything, which is a refreshing non-feature in this age of multitasking gadgets.
"It's available exclusively in green, because some apples are green," Jim Beam master distiller Fred Noe deadpans in a launch video. There's an actual product tie-in happening here. Beam released Jim Beam Apple, a mixture of apple liqueur and bourbon, in 2015.
The Jim Beam Apple Watch doesn't discriminate. You can put any liquid you want in it. You also don't have to worry about finding a power outlet or recharging it every night. Just reach for a bottle of whiskey and you're all set.
