iPhone 5S shipping times slashed to 1-3 days in the UK

Apple's cut the time you'll be waiting if you want a new iPhone 5S in the UK, with the fingerprint-reading new blower shipped within 1-3 days.

Apple's slashed the time you'll be waiting if you want a new iPhone 5S in the UK, with the fingerprint-reading new blower shipped within 1-3 days of ordering from the Californian company's website.

That doesn't mean you'll be happily unlocking your new mobile with a touch of your sweaty digit in that time -- it still has to travel all the way here from China. But it's a big improvement on the previous delay of a week or two.

The 5S starts from £549 for the 16GB model, and is available for free on two-year contracts starting at £37 per month.

Supplies of the new phone were reportedly constrained by the fiddly Touch ID sensor and its fancy sapphire cover. Apple recently signed a deal to open a huge new sapphire factory in Arizona, but it's yet to come online. More likely demand for the 5S has simply slowed to the point where Apple's factories can keep up.

The cheery, cheaper iPhone 5C, meanwhile, is available within a day. The more expensive iPhone is reportedly outselling its colourful junior by a ratio of three to one, with the Apple faithful apparently unimpressed with last year's blower tarted up with a plastic case.

The 5S failed to rock our world in our review, with Andy finding it so similar to the previous iPhone that it was hard to get excited about, even with the handy Touch ID sensor. Nevertheless, it's still extremely powerful and a classy bit of kit all round.
