Intel's inside Apple TV

The new Apple TV product comes with an Intel processor, Apple CEO Steve Jobs revealed Tuesday in his keynote address at Macworld.

The chip is a low-power processor that was designed specifically for low-power applications, such as the small confines of the Apple TV box, said Claudine Mangano, an Intel spokeswoman. She declined to provide the chip's clock speed or thermal profile.

Intel has been developing low-power chips for set-top boxes and other devices that can't tolerate heat for several years, but the chip Apple is using is the first of its kind, Mangano said. Intel wouldn't say if other manufacturers are planning on using the chip, which is based on older technology than the company's newest Core microarchitecture.
