Intel lays faster network foundation

To help computer networks handle the increasing loads of multimedia data and Internet and intranet traffic, Intel has introduced its own high-speed network hub.

Network hubs handle data switching in a computer network. The new Intel Express 100BASE-TX Switching Hub delivers low-cost, 100-mbps networking performance for workgroups with hundreds of client PCs, the company said.

Scheduled to ship at the end of March, the 100BASE-TX hub will cost $4,995.

In the second quarter, Intel will introduce a Windows-based SNMP (simple network management protocol) software tool that can be used to manage the hub. Intel also introduced a series of add-in modules for the hub and a package of Fast Ethernet products.
