IBM has sold its 3,000th high-end S80 Unix server to United Airlines, the company will announce Friday. Sun Microsystems still dominates the Unix server market, but analysts have credited the S80 and its update, the p680, with putting more pressure on Sun's high-end E10000.
United bought three S80s to help run its international pricing software. The Unix server market has grown along with the arrival of the Internet, the increasing computerization of large companies, and the slower-than-expected improvements to Windows servers. IBM is the third-largest Unix server seller after Sun and Hewlett-Packard, but has aspirations to be No. 1.
