HP's lack of imagination

A News.com reader says that a merger is the most unimaginative thing HP could do, and to merge with the most unimaginative PC manufacturer is even dumber.

In response to the March 5 Perspectives column by John Dickinson, "HP-Compaq: Dumb and dumber":

Carly Fiorina started off at Hewlett-Packard by urging its employees to "invent." She will end instead with layoffs and a merger.

"Invent" became the marketing slogan for HP, and we were all told they were the leader in technology innovation--HP's garage was a symbol of that dynamism and imagination. A merger is the most unimaginative thing HP could do, and to merge with the most unimaginative PC manufacturer is even dumber.

John Dickinson was justifiably harsh. It looks like the only innovative Silicon Valley companies left are Handspring and Apple Computer. Now that's a merger.
