@Home to expand internationally

The company announces its first deal outside of North America to provide high-speed Net access via cable, forming a venture called @Home Netherlands.

@Home today announced its first deal outside of North America to provide high-speed Net access via cable.

The company said it is forming a venture, dubbed @Home Netherlands, with Dutch operators CasTel and Palet Kabelcom to provide the service in Belgium and the Netherlands. An estimated 10 percent of households in the Netherlands have a Net connection, one of the highest penetration rates outside of the United States.

"With increasing consumer demand, high disposable income, and high usage-based telephone charges for dial-up access, Europe is a promising market for high-speed cable Internet services," @Home chief executive Tom Jermoluk said in a statement.

The @Home Netherlands service will be made available to about 1.4 million homes, or 20 percent of Dutch households.

The European expansion comes in the wake of @Home's plans to offer multiplayer gaming to users via a deal with SegaSoft.

"The company believes that international markets will provide a substantial opportunity for its services," @Home said in a recent regulatory filing. "The markets that the company plans to target first are Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Australia."

@Home already provides service in Canada.
