Hard drive upgrade kit unveiled

Portable Enhancement Products releases a hard drive upgrade kit for notebook computers, with a capacity of 4GB.

Portable Enhancement Products released a hard drive upgrade kit for notebook computers. At 4GB, one drive is the largest available.

Portable Enhancements is offering five drives between 810MB and 4GB. The upgrade supports MS-DOS, Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT, and OS/2.

Portable's kits currently service more than 300 makes and models, according to the company. While designed for notebooks, the upgrade kit is also compatible with desktop models.

With a removable drive drawer that fits into a notebook's "bay" or slot, such as Toshiba's Selectbay or Compaq's multibay adaptor, or with Portable Enhancements' Driveport product, users can plug in a second drive for a total of up to 8GB of storage.

The upgrade kit comes with the hard drive, necessary hardware and software, and step-by-step instructions for installation.

Pricing ranges from $324 for the 810MB kit to $924 for the 4GB kit. Installation costs another $75 and includes data transfer, virus scan, a full diagnostic, and shipping.
