Handspring courts corporate buyers

The maker of handheld devices will announce several steps aimed at boosting sales to businesses.

Handspring plans to announce Tuesday several steps aimed at boosting sales to businesses, including an alliance with an outside sales force.

A maker of handheld devices running the Palm operating system, Handspring has already made some efforts in this area as sales to consumers have stagnated. On Tuesday, the company will announce several initiatives to boost that effort.

The company has signed a deal with MarketLink, which will serve as an outsourced sales force with about 40 people pitching Handspring devices to companies. Handspring also will work with CDW-G, the government sales arm of CDW Computer Centers, to seek public-sector customers.

In addition, the company is working with Global Wireless Data, an agent for several major U.S. telecommunications companies, to sell wireless Handspring products.

"Handspring has always focused on vertical markets like health care, logistics and education," said Kendall Fargo, Handspring's vice president of enterprise sales. "Now we are starting to see traction with businesses looking to extend existing solutions beyond the desktop."

Handspring, whose corporate customers include Paramount Pictures and Sara Lee, reports fiscal fourth quarter earnings Wednesday. A consensus of analysts expects the company to lose 12 cents per share.
