Common myth has held that Google pays its workers bank, and now new data shows there's truth behind that tale.
Company-review site Glassdoor released its 2014 list of the top 25 companies for compensation and benefits on Friday and the No. 1 spot went to Google. With high salaries, free transport to and from work, and top chefs cooking their food, the company's employees appear to be satisfied.
"The company really takes care of us professionally and personally," a Google senior software engineer told Glassdoor. "The benefits are incredibly high. My team has been on offsites to Tahoe, Vegas, and Hawaii in the last year. The company creates an environment where you don't really want to leave campus."
The top spot honors come via hundreds of thousands of employee surveys across all industries that are voluntarily submitted to Glassdoor. The review site did not release specifics on how much employees make at each of the top 25 companies.
Not far behind Google on the list was Facebook. The social network was rated No. 3 for all companies and No. 2 for tech companies. And, coming in third for tech companies was Adobe, which got No. 4 overall. Other tech companies that made the list include Salesforce, Microsoft, and eBay.
"Excellent benefits and employee perks -- onsite healthcare, chiropractor, acupuncture, gym and many others I haven't tried out yet," a Facebook program manager told Glassdoor. Another Facebook employee, a software engineer, said, "Great pay, stocks and bonuses. Amazing perks! Lots of food choices, great campus, regular team happy hours with great food, and the list goes on and on."
Tech companies are known for giving their staff competitive salaries with excellent fringe benefits, like free gourmet food, on-site laundry, and nap rooms. So, it's not really a surprise that the tech industry dominated Glassdoor's compensation and benefits list. Of the 25 companies on the list, 12 are in the tech sector.
While Glassdoor is known for making lists on the, , and even which firms ask the , this is the first time Glassdoor has created a top compensation and benefits list.
