Gateway PC services pick up speed

Gateway said its PC services are paying off. Sales of the PC maker's consultation and networking services to small- and medium-sized businesses more than doubled in the fourth quarter of 2001 compared with the same quarter in 2000. During that time, Gateway broadened its services portfolio to include more involved, but also more lucrative, ongoing service contracts. Services, delivered primarily through the company's Country store retail outlets, are likely to be a bright spot in a lackluster first quarter for Gateway. The company said last month that it expects to post a pretax loss for the first quarter of $100 million to $120 million, excluding charges of $75 million to $100 million for restructuring.
