My Little Pony fans embrace the toys and animated TV shows for their light-hearted nature and focus on sweet concepts like friendship, helping others and maintaining a beautiful mane. But sometimes friendship isn't magic. Sometimes, friendship is doom. A Kickstarter project takes the big-footed, big-headed My Little Pony toy look and applies it to a series of hell-beasts bent on the destruction of the world.
Bigshot Toyworks is a collective of designers, toy makers and other creative types. The company already successfully funded a Cthulhu-style pony on Kickstarter and is now getting more ambitious by offering the Four Horsies of the 'Pocalypse. Instead of Rainbow Dash or Twilight Sparkle, Bigshot brings us Calamity (Pestilence), Raven (Famine), Clash (War) and Ghost (Death).
Raven sports wings and freaky-big red eyes. Clash rocks a war helmet and armor. Calamity wears a removable gas mask and appears to made out of flames. Ghost is a skeleton with creepy skele-wings and a pointy unicorn horn. The twisted ponies have special powers like plaguemancy and necrotic touch. As you might have noticed, these toys are aimed at the adult crowd.
The Kickstarter has so far raised over $23,000 towards a $60,000 goal with 30 days left to run. Most of the pledge levels have limited production numbers. It will cost you $100 (about £66, AU$122) to back the reward level for a boxed set of all four horses in the 4-inch size. If you don't mind pledging more, you can get the same set in clear or in a glowing green color.
The Four Horsies somehow manage to be both a little frightening and a little cute at the same time. It would take a certain kind of Brony to want to buy the set, but it's bound to appeal to people who grew up with My Little Pony, but have since moved on to shows like "The Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones."
