The Q4 report from Facebook shows that mobile users have now overtaken desktop users for the social-networking giant.
Facebook is now officially more of an app than a website. Its fourth-quarter report shows that there were 680 million mobile monthly users, a growth of 57 per cent year on year.
It also noted that mobile daily active users exceeded web daily active users in the fourth quarter. In fact, back on monthly active users, there are now 157 million users who only access Facebook via mobile devices.
In total, Facebook now has 1.06 billion monthly active users and — for the full year of 2012 — made approximately $5.32 per user worldwide.
While the news looks good, there's a lot of concern about Facebook's ability to monetise its mobile audience. Mobile revenue contributed just 23 per cent of Facebook's ad revenue, although this was up from 14 per cent earlier in 2012.
Facebook remains bullish about its mobile future, however, with Mark Zuckerberg saying at the earnings call:
I want to dispel this myth that Facebook can't make money on mobile. It may have seemed like that a year ago, because we weren't really trying yet.
