Disposable cell phones means more junk

In response to the July 31 article "Tossing cell phones in the trash":

Just what we need: more junk to fill up the landfills. Unless these phones are made to be recycled, we have just created another source of garbage. It seems like far too many people in the United States are only interested in manufacturing more "stuff" that generates more garbage for the landfills which are moving ever closer to highly populated areas.

Why can't there be more focus on making very low-cost phones that are reusable?
