Dell gains in Latin American PC market

The PC market in Latin America fared much better than most others in the third quarter. Worldwide PC sales slid by about 12 percent compared with the third quarter of 2000, but Latin American sales fell only about 3 percent to 1.8 million units. In what has become a familiar theme, Dell Computer's sales in the region picked up considerably. Dell, the No. 4 PC maker in the region, saw sales rise 52 percent, while sales for No. 1 Compaq Computer fell by 30 percent. Compaq holds about 22 percent of the market. Meanwhile, No. 2 Hewlett-Packard and No. 3 IBM slipped 3 percent and 13 percent, respectively. Local company Alaska, the No. 5 seller, increased sales by 26 percent.
