Big tech companies are plunking down lots of cash to bulk up in artificial intelligence and conversational software.

In the latest example of that trend, Cisco on Thursday said it agreed to buy AI firm MindMeld for $125 million. The San Francisco startup builds "human-like" conversational interfaces for apps and devices.

Cisco said MindMeld's technology will be used for new conversational interfaces for its products, such as using natural-language commands to interact with the Cisco Spark messaging platform.

The deal is expected to close by the end of this year.
