The much-hyped 12000 Gigabit Switch Router line is Cisco's answer to the growing number of high-end switches, which include routing functions and cost far less than the company's bread-and-butter routers.
The latest routing box fills in the middle of Cisco's high-end line targeted at the Internet Service Provider (ISP) market. The Cisco 12008 speeds data at 10 to 40 gbps (gigabits per second), performance that fits snugly between the blazing12012 router and the entry-level 12004 device.
The 12008 includes support for OC-3 and OC-12 (optical carrier) SONET (synchronous optical network) rates, and will eventually scale to OC-48 rates, while also integrating ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) and packet-based connections.
The 12008 is available now with prices starting at $19,900.
