Upon the completion of the merger between Linux seller Caldera Systems and the Unix products and services of the Santa Cruz Operation, the combined company will change its name to Caldera International, Caldera Systems said Monday. The merger was delayed until the second quarter of the year so Caldera Systems could acquire more of SCO's product line.
In addition, SCO announced version 8 of its main product, formerly called UnixWare and now called Open Unix. The biggest new feature is the Linux Kernel Personality (LKP), which allows software for Linux to run unchanged on SCO's higher-end Unix software. The combined companies' strategy is to allow use of Linux software on higher-end servers than Linux allows.
